Elaine Thélier

I have drawn in pen most of my life. I love drawing the lines, contours and small details of natural forms and everyday objects around me. I find drawing totally absorbing, almost meditative, and I can easily lose myself in the activity. My aim is to represent the sculptural, architectural and ephemeral qualities when I see something exciting, stimulating or whatever interests me in the moment – a row of beans, grasses waving in the breeze, ripening seed heads, sliced oranges, old worn cutlery. I never stop looking and often imagine drawing with my eyes. I use a variety of transparent papers on which to draw and I play around with images and layer these on a range of colours. I sometimes reproduce my images in designs on everyday homeware products and stationery and enjoy how repeating, enlarging or combining drawings can create images for contemporary designs.

I studied art at Bath Spa University College where I developed an interest in pen and ink drawing. I am based on the Pennines in Yorkshire and combine my art work with my outdoor therapy business.
